Mobile money scams and how they work

Most mobile money fraud does not break the system. It talks you into handing over your PIN, approving a payment, or sending money back to a stranger.

  1. 1

    The "wrong transfer" call.

Someone claims they sent money to you by mistake and begs you to return it. Check your real balance in the app or by the official short code first. If nothing arrived, nothing needs to go back.

  2. 2

    The fake reversal or promotion.

A caller says you won a promotion or a reversal is pending and asks you to dial a code or approve a prompt. Real reversals never need your PIN.

  3. 3

    The agent or customer-care impersonator.

Staff will never ask for your PIN. Hang up and call the number printed on your SIM pack or the provider's official website.

  4. 4

    SIM swap.

If your phone suddenly loses network for no reason, contact your provider immediately. Attackers take over your number to receive your codes.

  5. 5

    If money already left.

Call your provider's fraud line straight away, note the transaction ID, and ask them to freeze the receiving wallet. Speed matters.

Your PIN is yours alone. No staff, no promotion, no emergency needs it.
