Incident guidance
What to do if you have been scammed
It happens to careful people too. What you do in the first hour matters more than what went wrong.
- 1
Stop the bleeding.
Change the password on the affected account, then on your email. Sign out of all other devices from the account settings.
- 2
Call the money side first.
Contact your bank or mobile money provider's fraud line immediately and give them the transaction details.
- 3
Keep the evidence.
Screenshots of messages, phone numbers, wallet numbers and transaction IDs. Do not delete the chat.
- 4
Report it.
Report to your provider, and to the Cyber Security Authority of Ghana: call or text 292 (24 hours), WhatsApp 050 160 3111, or email report@csa.gov.gh. You can also call 292 before sending money to check a suspicious request. Reports help take down the numbers and wallets used.
- 5
Warn the people around you.
Scammers often use a compromised account to target contacts next. A quick message to family and groups stops the spread.
Act in the first hour. Secure accounts, call the money side, keep evidence, report.
